Ballet is the foundation of all dance forms. Students will learn classical ballet positions, theory, vocabulary, movements, and artistry of this beautiful performing art! As students progress through the levels, minimum training requirements are in place to ensure adequate strength and flexibility is maintained for safe training. Dance is a physically demanding art form. The Director and Faculty reserve the right to make decisions based on individual placement and needs of the dancer.

Basic Ballet is for new students ages 8 and up.

Ballet 1A is for new 8-year-olds or by teacher recommendation.

All Levels 1B and up require teacher recommendation.

Parents and dancers have invested a lot of time, effort, energy and resources and the following is recommended to maintain technique. Additional classes may be taken to accelerate progress.

At Huntington Academy of Dance, we use the Cecchetti USA syllabi for our method of ballet instruction. This progressive method builds a dancer from the youngest Primary student all the way through Professional levels in an intentional step by step curriculum. Students participate in an annual Exam Performance where each dancer presents a memorized body of work and receives a personal evaluation by an Examiner from Cecchetti USA. Students typically progress one level each year. We celebrate our success with an annual Celebration Tea in the spring!

Enrollment for Exam Classes is by invitation only and requires a minimum of one other flat ballet technique class per week at HAD. It is recommended that students studying Grade 4 and up take a minimum of two additional flat ballet technique classes per week.

Please note: Students who take fewer than the recommended classes may advance more slowly through the progression of the Cecchetti Exams.

Pointe 3 dancers are welcome to attend without a partner as the class does rotate partners around so everyone can participate. (No charge for the men.)

Students will learn tap technique using upbeat and fun music! Tap dance is both a form of dance and a form of percussion. Students wear tap shoes with metal "taps" on shoes - the ball of the foot and the heel. These "taps" are used to produce the rythmic sounds. There are two major forms of tap - Broadway and Rhythm. Broadway style tap is more dance based and used in Musical Theater. Rhythm tap focuses on musicality and is emphasized as the student progresses to the higher levels.

Tap Beginning is for students new to tap. Tap 2 and higher require teacher recommendation.

Fitted dance attire including black jazz pants or shorts, and a fitted tank top or tee shirt, with black tap shoes and tan jazz shoes (jazz shoes for tap/jazz combo class).  Modesty is to be observed-no crop tops or excessively small shorts.

Tap shoes required. We have a limited supply of gently used shoes at the studio that your student is welcome to try on. We request a $5 donation if you would like to purchase those shoes.

Note:
No jewelry or watches are to be worn during class.

Jazz dance is wildly popular, fun, and accessible for all! Students will learn isolations, progressions, turns, kicks, and leaps using upbeat pop music. Our dancers love learning fun and trendy dance routines in this non competitive environment.

Our studio is family friendly with costumes and age appropriate themes. We value modesty in costuming and clean language in our song choices.

Ballet students wishing to take Jazz should take a placement class in the Jazz class that is one level below their current Ballet Level. Then s/he will be placed in the appropriate level. Students not enrolled in ballet should take a placement class in Jazz 1 and will then be placed in the appropriate level.

Fitted dance attire including black jazz pants or shorts, and a fitted tank top or tee shirt, with tan jazz shoes and black tap shoes (tap shoes for tap/jazz combo class).  Modesty is to be observed-no crop tops or excessively small shorts.

Students will learn dancing, acting, and singing in this Broadway style class! Students will learn the lyrics and story of the songs, how to sing the notes, and how to convey the emotion and theme to the audience. Then the choreography is added to create wonderful routines! Musical theater performers are often referred to as "triple threats" for their ability to sing, dance, and act!

We recommend concurrent enrollment in Tap and/or Jazz.

Each spring we select students for our Musical Theatre Troupe which performs at various venues around Orange County. Our Musical Theatre Troupe also performs at our Holiday Demonstrations in December and culminates in a mini production at our annual June Recital.
